. good to have you with us, folks. thanks for watching. the new republican strategy is to take the american economy hostage when they don't get what they want. they realize their back is against the wall on tax rates for the rich, so they are turning their attention to another target, and it's a familiar one. here is tennessee senator bob corker talking about tax rates for the top 2% of americans. >> a lot of people are putting forth a theory, and i actually think it has merit where you go in and give the president the 2% increase that he is talking about, the rate increase on the top 2%. >> as usual, there is a catch. here it is. >> but republicans know that they have the debt ceiling that is coming up right around the corner, and the leverage is going to shift as soon as we get beyond this issue. the leverage is going to shift to our side where hopefully we'll do the same thing we did last time. and that is if the president wants to raise the debt limit by $2 trillion, we get $2 trillion in spending reductions. and hopefully this time it's mostly oriented towards entitlements

, the debacle of all debacles. it's the mother of all debacles. that was brought up in an effort to send us something. he couldn't even pass it among the republicans it was so absurd. he meaning the speaker. so it's very clear now, mr. president, that the speaker's number one goal is to get elected speaker on january 3rd. the house is not even here. he's told me he'll give them two days to get back here, 48 hours, not two days, 48 hours. they don't even have enough of the leadership here to meet to talk about it. they've done it with conference calls. people are spread all over this country because the speaker is basically waiting for january 3rd. now, the president campaigned on raising taxes on people making more than $250 thou,000 a year. the bush tax cut will expire at the end of this year. obama was elected with a surplus of about three million votes. he won the election. he campaigned on this issue. again, the speaker can't take yes for an answer. the president has presented to him something that would prevent us from going over the cliff. it was response to something that the speaker

with the latest. what happened here? >> reporter: the san mateo county bomb squad found acid and explosives used by the military inside the garage of this home as well as ether. so these chemicals were dettated in the -- detonated in the front yard of the home. crews were called in to dispose of the chemicals located inside the garage. the bomb squad felt the chemicals were too dangerous to be moved and detonated at a different location. they dug a hole and placed sandbags around it. the home's windows were boarded up, but they still broke during the explosion. the homeowner who kept these chemicals inside his garage were there for 30 years. the neighbor was a dentist and chemist. he has passed away. his widow did not want to speak with us on camera. 500 homes in the area were asked to shelter in place. we'll hear from the fire battalion chief. >> there was lots of chemicals that we were concerned with after talking to the sheriff's office. two we were told were something that needed to be taken care of on site. they couldn't transport it, very dangerous, the chance of explosion was real great.

dead in glen bernie. kim dacey joins us live with details. >> police said it happened around 6:00 a.m. yesterday when an intruder broke into the business on baltimore annapolis boulevard. and man was found shot to death in front of a place in glen bernie. they said the man broke into the store not knowing somebody was inside. that was the store's owner, jim butler. they got into an altercation inside the business and philip was eventually shot. philip eventually collapsed in the parking lot. he had been having difficulties with people breaking into the stores and this time he happened to be there when it happened. philip had a vast criminal record including theft and various drug offenses. so far no charges have been filed in this case. kim dacey, wbal-tv 11 news. >> there were two separate christmas day shootings. what happened on druid park lake drive. officers found a male suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. no word as to a suspect or a possible motive. there's a shooting in west baltimore. and now was found with a gunshot wound to his upper body. no word this morning on h

by floor and we've seen the light kind of giving us an indication of where the search has been going. now, if you can see, we just a few minutes ago the lights came on on the top floor and, again, the students and faculty that were inside during the lockdown were told to keep their lights off and the blinds closed so any kind of light like that probably indicates that the police are up there and conducting their search in that area. i will say that the police officers coming in and out of the building seem very calm. no one is rushing in and out so the light at the top of the floor could be a good indication that the search is, you know, well underway on what might be the final floor of this building. we've been talking to students as they come out of the campus area and, again, as we said before, it's more of a partial lockdown now. one of the students who was in the tech building before said there was probably maybe 100 the 200 students in the whole building at one time mainly because it's finals week and they thought there were mainly about 60 people on the floor that he was on so it w
